Accident during Operation Gets Reprimand, Fine for Water Filtration Company

October 8th, 2009

In the wake of a judgement at Ipswich following a fatal accident at the UK’s largest port, yet another company has been prosecuted for an accident, prompting a reiteration of the Health and Safety Executive’s call for better safety measures at workplace. Fortunately, the latter accident did not cause any fatalities, although the victim suffered grievous injuries when a heavy steel component fell on him casing a pelvic fracture.

Following these incidents, the HSE has sternly reprimanded companies for failing to maintain safe working conditions at the place of employment. Using the latest incident as a case in point, the HSE is asking employers to use the best equipment suited for each operation and to set down process-based systems and guidelines for high-risk operations.

The prosecuted company is Eimco Water Technologies Ltd, a water filtration unit, which processes seawater and channelizes it for use as coolant in power stations. The accident occurred when contractor Grzegorz Trafisz was assembling the necessary equipment prior to initiating the filtration process at Marchwood Power Station. Steel gates that were fixed nearly a meter above ground using axles came crashing down on Trafisz, fracturing his pelvic bones.

An investigation revealed that the company did not properly assess potential hazards in such a delicate operation. Proper and adequate safety measures were not in place either, and this increased the chances of accidents. The hearing at Southampton concluded with the imposition of a hefty fine plus costs on the company, which pleaded guilty to breach of provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
