Something for Everyone to Try out — Botulinum Injections Sydney

September 10th, 2009

BoTox has become ingrained amongst stylish Sydney society in fact it is fast becoming a grooming necessity for many in the city.

But I am often astonished by the misguided urban legends surrounding this procedure. I have included below a selection of the popular mistakes which I come across day in day out at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a doctor.

Mistaken Belief Number 1: I might not be able to express myself normally!

There are sixty or so muscles under the skin of your face. The continued use of these muscles may result in wrinkle formation. If excessive BoTox is injected the muscles of the face can sometimes become a liile bit less expressive. By and large doctors use comparatively minute amounts to will result in you appearing ‘refreshed’, but still you will keep your facial expression.

By employing a carefully measured quantity of the wrinkle injection in precisely the right tissues facial expression is retained whilst any lines are reduced.

Mistaken Belief Number 2: Botulinum is a poison!
This to some extent is correct. Its scientific name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. In massive quantities it may result in a decrease in muscle tone or may make one very ill.

Pharmacists have a well known phrase that states ‘everything is poisonous - all depending on the dose’. All medicines in a large dosage will make you sick. Even water can be a poison if you take too much.

Mistaken Belief Number 3: BoTox will sting!
Your hairs are thicker than the hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. A lot of patients state that the treatments aren’t as painful as a bug bite. It is certainly not as painful as something like a blood profile.

Mistaken Belief Number 4: I will lose feeling in my face!
Totally untrue. BoTox targets the neuromuscular junction, not the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by BoTox.

Mistaken Belief Number 5. You cannot stop having BoTox or you will develop worse wrinkles than ever!
Also incorrect.

A BoTox treatment will be effective for around 3 months. Consequent injections tend to last a few weeks more. Gradually as muscle strength builds up again - the lines will return little by little. But they will certainly be no worse than previously.

In fact any wrinkles should be be softer than if you hadn’t undergone BoTox injections - even if you don’t persevere with the injections. Principally due to the fact that your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ during the therapy.
