The History And Power Of The Heritage Foundation

January 10th, 2009

The Heritage Foundation is a very influential public policy research institute that is located in Washington, DC. It is a conservative “think tank” that has had a significant impact on both domestic and foreign United States government policies.

History of the Heritage Foundation

The Heritage Foundation was founded in 1973. The initial funding for the formation of the Heritage Foundation came from Joseph Coors, who is the politically conservative owner of Coors Brewing Company. Paul Weyrich, who is a conservative activist, was the first head of the Heritage Foundation. The president of the Heritage Foundation since 1974 has been Edwin Feulner, Jr., who was the formerly the staff director of the House Republican Study Committee.

Initiatives of the Heritage Foundation

The Heritage Foundation has been long known for its influential and wide-ranging work. Its book Mandate for Leadership was published in 1981. This 1,000 page book forever changed the character of public policy advice giving. It provided recommendations on budget, policy, and administrative action for the incoming administration of President Ronald Regan. These recommendations included action for every Cabinet department, as well as for many other agencies staffed with political appointees.

The Heritage Foundation was also the primary creator and advocate of the Reagan Doctrine in the 1980’s and the early 1990’s. Within the Reagan Doctrine, the United States government provided support, both overt and covert, to anti-communist resistance movements in countries such as Angola, Nicaragua, Cambodia, and Afghanistan. The Heritage Foundation also supported global anti-communism throughout the Cold War. In fact, the Heritage Foundation was active at the time in providing military and political guidance to rebel forces in Angola, Nicaragua, and Cambodia, as well as to dissidents in Soviet republics and Eastern bloc nations.

The Heritage Foundation also played a key role in the advancement of President Reagan’s belief that the Soviet Union was an “evil empire.” It further supported the belief that the former Soviet Union needed to be defeated, not merely contained. The Heritage Foundation was instrumental in helping to build support for Reagan’s plans to build the Strategic Defense Initiative, which was an orbital ballistic missile shield.

The Heritage Foundation is also an advocate of supply side economics, which is an economic policy that maintains reductions in the marginal rate of taxation can lead to economic growth. To assist in spreading this belief, the Heritage Foundation partners with the Wall Street Journal to publish an annual international report called Index of Economic Freedom. This report measures the freedom of the country in relation to its property rights and its freedom from regulation by the government. The Heritage Foundation takes factors such as barriers to international trade, corruption in government, corporate tax rates, income tax, rule of law, government expenditures, the ability to enforce contracts, banking restrictions, regulatory burdens, black market activities, and labor regulations to calculate the index score for this report. Any deficiencies in any of these areas lead to a lower score.

Financing the Heritage Foundation

The Heritage Foundation has a great deal of power on Capitol Hill, but insists that it doesn’t lobby to get its way. This allows the Heritage Foundation to retain a tax exempt status as a charity. Due to its status as a charitable organization, the Heritage Foundation was able to collect $29.7 million in 2004. The majority of these funds are from individual donors and conservative foundations.

What Do You Do When Your Online Dating Ad Gets No Response?

January 10th, 2009

For most people who would like to be happy with their love life, dating is probably the single most important activity that one should engage in before they proceed on the more serious part like marriage.

If successfully pursued, dating can provide greater gratifications to those who wished they were happier and more contented with their lives. If ever they failed, it is probably the most horrifying event of their lives.

Having a bad hair day, a missed flight, or a burned fried egg, can be endured by most people, but to have a bad date is like living in agony. When love becomes decapitated, life becomes a survival of the losers.

No wonder why everybody is trying hard to come up with something unique and quirkily entertaining when it comes to personal ads. These ads are not the typical ads that people see on televisions or on print medium. Personal ads are more like profiles, though; the main purpose is also to advertise one’s self.

People who vie for personal ads are those who hope that somebody love begets love and that somebody will soon find them amidst the many singles who try their luck in cupid’s daunting game.

So, here goes an individual, with all fingers crossed as she post her personal ad online, trying to find the love of her life and wishing that someday, somebody would soon reply.

Five days, two weeks, 4 months, and still, she does not get a response. The next things she knew, she is already retracting her personal ad, sulk in the corner, and cry. She wails as if the whole world had crumpled on her. She starts to have low self-esteem and begins to blame herself for not being desirable enough to get responses.

What she failed to do is to analyze what went wrong. She failed to look back on her personal ad, identify each part, and evaluate what should have been done right in order to get the response she desperately needed.

The problem with most people, who fails to get responses on their online dating ads, is that they easily get depressed, and once they are depressed, they start to blame their selves and curse whoever managed to come up with an idea such as online dating and personal ads.

This should not be the case because not identifying the real problem or the ultimate cause of such negative results would only mean that the person is not really interested. Or maybe, he or she is interested but is too desperate to have positive results but do not have any idea how to make it happen.

Hence, people should know what to do with their personal ads in order to gain the gratifications they wanted. So, for people who want to have knockout personal ads that are proven to have positive results, here is a list of some tips on making personal ads:

1. People should learn how to describe their selves truthfully and exactly.

When making personal ads, people should take note of the things they should include on their ad. Like copy ads, each details should be made out of the creative juices of the person and constructed into such marvelous description of one’s self. It should include more solid information that will provide the other person, who will view the ad, with a more visualized concept of the person in the ad.

The explanation behind this logical reason is relatively simple. Who would dare try to obtain an item if the buyer does not know what he is paying for? Hence, it goes to show that before somebody replies on one’s personal ad, the other person should feel the enticement in order to compel him or her to respond.

2. It would be better to tell more stories and not reports.

People should always remember that they are writing their personal ads. This means that they should meticulously find some ways on how to make their selves saleable to the viewing public.

It would be better to write some stories about their life and experiences. However, one should take note not to overdo this one as it will appear and sound like a mushy write-up ready to be devoured by some hungry wastebasket.

It is best to write something people can relate to. Persons who would like to have positive results on their ads should know where to draw the line between telling something about their selves and bragging about their selves. They are entirely two different things that derive two different reactions.

Best of all, honesty should always be incorporated in whatever write-up they do.

3. People should never dwell on negative aspects like problems or failed relationships.

Posting personal ads is not about obtaining some help from other people. So, there’s no room for advices or petty counseling sessions. It’s best to create a personal ad that would draw in positive responses by creating positive profiles first.

As they say, once somebody started something negatively, chances are, the negative vibe will stick up to the end.

The key point in writing personal ads is to come up with something that will appear very interesting and attention grabbing.

So, if a person gets no response on his or her ad, there is no use to cry over spilled milk. What matters most is how to start all over again and try again the quest with a nice, enticing personal ad.

Katrina: Victims For Life?

January 10th, 2009

There can be no debate about the horror of the World Trade Center attack. No conceivable rational excuse for the criminal destruction of spectacular buildings and thousands of innocent lives can be advanced. It was monstrous; it was deadly; it was immoral.

Four years later, the survivors still mourn their loved ones and the world looks to ground zero as the crucial moment when American innocence died. Somehow, the families of those who perished moved on. Several thousand Federal dollars in compensation did not take away the pain but did enable dreams of a life still worth living.

Only after the settlements were made were the cries of the families in Oklahoma heard. Those families, too, suffered a terrible loss but received only speeches and sympathy.

And now there are the victims of Katrina. Not only were hundreds of family members lost but, in addition, entire businesses, lifestyles, community bonds, and the independence conferred by gainful employment were entirely obliterated. We must ask ourselves: do we deal with victims in an evenhanded manner?

The financial safety nets of insurance, high pre-trauma earnings, and safety member retirement systems, were already in place in New York. The financial largesse of the government provided an even larger buffer against the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune.

Most of Katrina’s victims lived their lives without a single tattered safety net in place. Poor, unskilled, and underemployed, many of these Gulf Coast residents barely stayed afloat even before the flood waters raged in. Now what little they had is gone. They cannot bury their dead and get on with life as the 911 families managed to do - because there is no life left.

The political think tanks that worry if a nominee is conservative enough, the lobbyists busily grabbing the largest slice of pork for their clients, and the Haliburtons, the Fluors, and the oil magnates have no emotional conception of the reality of poverty. While difficulty in paying the bills is common at all economic levels, contrast that with someone who has no bills because they have nothing: no debts, no creditors - but also no money, no food, no home, no resources.

For those still living in shelters or staying at a hotel until the vouchers run out this month - where are the federal dollars to help them move on? The government can’t even figure out how to get generators to hospitals nor trailer homes to available land.

After the photo-ops, the dramatic flyovers, and the congressional appropriation bills, our leaders will go home to their comfortable beds with easy consciences, confident that they have done what was needed. Years from now, the victims will still be suffering as are those who were displaced long ago by Hurricane Andrew.

Unless they are lucky enough to become the swing vote in a tight election, they will recede from the front pages and slowly submerge beneath the slime of poverty, a more permanent threat than any temporary storm.
