How To Make Personalized Candle Gifts From Ordinary Candles

November 30th, 2008

If you are looking for a fun gift to make for any occasion, then personalized candle making may be something you would like to consider. There are many ways to make personalized candles, depending on how much time and money you are willing to spend. With just a little extra time and effort, you can make a personalized candle out of an otherwise ordinary candle gift that the lucky recipient will love.

1. The simplest way to make a personalized candle is get a normal candle at your local candle store. Even general retail stores like Walmart sometimes have candles for sale. Candles come in all shapes and sizes, but almost any candle can be personalized.

2. Anything smaller than a tea light will be difficult to personalize. For tea light candles, you can normally purchase a big bag for a low price. These candles are great as favors for guests at a wedding or baby shower. The easiest way to personalize is to use either a graphics program on your computer or a word processor. We’ll stick with the Word processor since it is easier. First, draw a circle the same dimensions as the lid on the tea light, or better yet use a circular label sheet. Then select a nice font, like cursive script or Corsiva. You can enter then names and date of the event into the circle. Print out a sample on plain paper to make sure the look and size is right. Once you have the desired result, you can print your tea light label stickers. Finally, apply the sticker onto the top of the tea light.

3. For jar candles, you can create a square-shaped personalized label. Since you have more area to work with, you can download free graphics from the Internet. Search the web for “free clip art” and download the images you want. Once again print out a sample on plain paper and then print the label. If you don’t have a color printer, you can go to a local copier and they can make a nice label for you. Stick the label on the jar. Now you have created a unique gift personalized just for that special person.

4. For tall pillar candles, you can get those engraved at an engraving shop (look in the phone book under engravers). The artwork and text can come in different colors. If you are artistic, you can even buy candle-engraving kits online and do it yourself.

5. How about those 1oz votive candles? For a professional looking gift, get cellophane bags and colored ribbon. Wrap the candle in the cello bag and tie it up with the ribbon. Then attach a personalized tag to the ribbon. These candles can also be engraved.

6. If you can make candles, then there are limitless possibilities. You can use different fragrances oils to create scented candles. You can use embeds for decoration. Cookie cutters and molds are also useful for designing the right shape.

In summary, you can take an ordinary store candle and make it a very special gift with just a little more effort. Your friends and loved ones will cherish these gifts for years to come.

The College Wait List Game

November 28th, 2008

While most parents prepare their child for acceptance or outright rejection, today?s competitive college environment includes a wild card. Helping your child decide what college to attend isn?t easy. Add a wait list to the mix and the difficult proc
After sorting through brochures, helping tailor the perfect essay, and juggling schedules to attend college nights, and campus visits, you await the answer to the all-important question. Did your senior make the grade for their top choice school? Unfortunately, when the letter of truth arrives it doesn?t offer ?congratulations? or ?regretfully inform.? Your child has been cordially invited to the ?wait list.?

While most parents prepare their child for acceptance or outright rejection, today?s competitive environment includes a wild card. Even honor students with 4.0 GPA?s,1460 SAT scores, numerous activities, and full scholarships from competing universities land on waiting lists. Since students now apply to a laundry list of schools, and many factors influence an applicants? decision it has become difficult for institutions to accurately project who will accept their offer. Admissions Officers rely on wait lists as insurance policies.

Helping your child decide what college to attend isn?t easy. Add a wait list to the mix and the difficult process can become downright confusing. ?Typically, these wait list decisions are made on a March to April time frame.? explains Al Newell, the Dean of enrollment at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA. He advises students to preserve another option for themselves if they are wait listed, ?By May 1, traditionally the national deposit date, wait-listed students should have a deposit at some other place. They should most definitely make sure they have another choice,? Newell advises. ?I would be the first to encourage them to make a deposit elsewhere if they were on my wait-list, because if I put them on that list, I?m telling them there is no guarantee

So, what steps should be taken if faced with a wait list dilemma?

First, assess the situation. According to Jim Bekkering, the Vice President for Admissions at Hope College in Holland, MI, the student and their parents should seriously decide how badly they want to be at that particular college. If this is the school of choice, make certain your student finds the facts.

Encourage them to politely call and ask the admissions office how many students are on the wait list, how many wait-listed students were admitted in the previous two years, and whether the wait list has been put into an order of preference. Also, find out what factors will be taken into account in deciding whom to accept from the list. This should give you a general sense of the chances of being chosen. Once you both clearly understand the process, decide on a timeframe, explains Bekkering, ?The stronger the desire is, the longer they should be willing to wait. It should be decided by each individual family.?

Next, write a letter to the admissions office immediately after receiving notice of being wait listed. Dr. Robert J. Massa, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Life at Dickinson College in Carlisle, suggest the student write a letter to the Director of Admissions explaining exactly why they believe the college is best for them. The applicant should ?outline why they think the college is the perfect match for them -their learning style, their style of interaction, and their educational objectives. Show that they know the college and that they know themselves. Tell the admissions director why the college will be a better place if they were there. If there is an opening, and the student does this, they will stand a better chance of getting in.”

Most importantly, don?t take the final decision as a personal insult. Colleges differ in how they take students from the wait list for admission. Sabena B. Moretz, Associate Director of Admission at the University of Richmond, explains, “Some will admit the student who calls them every day because they believe that student is the most likely to enroll. Others admit student athletes, star musicians or students with particular personal qualities that the school needs.?

Instead, play the cards that are dealt. Help your child prepare for the second choice school. It can?t hurt to stay on a wait list, but if you’re son or daughter is waitlisted at one institution, the odds are great they?ve been accepted somewhere very similar. Allow yourself and your child to become excited about where they’ve been accepted. No matter the outcome, the college selection process should remain a positive experience.

Spending Too Much on Your Phone Bills?

November 27th, 2008

If like me you are feeling the effects of the burgeoning credit crunch, you’ll be excited to hear that there is a surprisingly simple way to save yourself a lot of cash. I use my mobile phone so much, it might as well be stuck to the side of my face, so when I found out it was possible to make cheap calls without having to mess around with a new SIM card - I wanted to hear more! There’s a fair few companies now which provide ‘mobile VoIP’, so essentially it’s like using Vonage as you would do at home accept on your mobile, wherever you are.

It’s as simple as downloading a small piece of software onto your mobile which lets you save loads on your bill by routing calls via the internet rather than over your usual mobile carrier network. The best bit is, it requires no technical expertise or anything. All you need to do is use your phone as you would do normally, except at a much lower cost. I get the feeling that this might spell trouble for the traditional mobile carrier networks, I have already saved a huge amount of money. It’s great for travelling as well as with my price package I pay the same low flat rate, and am not faced with roaming charges or anything.

Why You Should Buy A Plasma Television

November 25th, 2008

The plasma television has many advantages and benefits
for you and your entertainment needs and wants. The
plasma tv gives you incredible picture quality, it has a
sleek design, and it is HDTV compatible.

Plasmas provide sharper images and more vibrant
colors. You can display both HDTV and DTV signals
as well as computer signals such as XGA, SVGA,
and VGA.

Plasmas Superior to Both CRT’s and LCD

Plasma screen televisions provide sharp, clear pictures,
plus no image distortion. CRTs can’t match this. Plasma
tvs have brighter pictures and provide a better viewing
angle at 160 degrees, than LCDs. For the best technology
in display panels, choose plasma technology.

High Resolution

Plasma display televisions have higher resolution than
most standard TV sets. They are able to display full
HDTV and DTV signals as well as XGA, SVGA, and
VGA signals from a computer. If a plasma has a
resolution of 1024×1024 it can display images from
1080i and 720i HDTV resolution, plus 480i and 480p
HD signals.

Flat Screen

Plasma display televisions have screens that are
completely flat. There is no distortion of the image
even at the edges and corners. Plus to increase
your viewing fun, the flat plasma screen tv provides
an amazing 160-degree viewing area.

Ultra Thin Design Saves Space

Plasma televisions can hang on almost any wall. You can
even hang them from your ceiling. Other advantages of
plasma screen tvs are high ambient light tolerance,
distortion free images, entirely digital techology, not
affected by magnetism, and can be attached to a ceiling
or wall, or used as a freestanding fixture.

GENDER DISCRIMINATION: MASSIVE LEGAL SECURITY NEEDED

November 23rd, 2008

without comprehensive approach and a coordinated strategy laid and implemented effectively by committed team, tackling women’s problems is going to be a nightmare!
Legal assistance denial from the law enforcer institutions in Tanzania is a major obstacle hindering achievement of the millennium development goals. In September 2000, 142 heads of state and government, and 189 nations in total, in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, committed themselves to making the right to development a reality for everyone and to freeing the entire human race from want.

They acknowledged that progress is based on sustainable economic growth, which must focus on the poor, with human rights at the center. Measurable goals were defined for combating poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environment degradation and discrimination against women.

Last 8th day of March, women allover the world gathered in their respective areas to commemorate their day. They snatched the opportunity to air their views on how to be empowered as per the International day’s theme and how they are being denied that right. Tanzanian women were not left behind on this.

The theme for this year is “Women empowerment: the key to achieving the millennium development goals”

Now, in Tanzania as in most of the African countries, implementation of the women empowerment is being threatened by gender discrimination caused by incorrect myths and misconceptions of the community.

This and other obstacles force the Tanzanian woman to face environmental burden: which is the result of unequal participation in education and decision - making at family, community and political levels. She therefore falls prey to rape, physical violence, gender harassment and abuse while denied legal assistance.

The treatment one Magdalena Ndilla (69) got from Magu district administration is an evident story of the stern picture. Herself a widow resident of Yitwimila village Mwanza region is a survivor of incorrect myths assault. In 1996 her assaulter stormed her room at right mutilated her with a panga six times. After six months’ treatment in Magu and Bugando hospitals respectively, she survived with palm less right hand, scars on both shoulders, left hand and two on the head (one penetrated right damaging her left eye). A sad side of the story is that even though she and her daughter saw and know her assaulter, the man roams the village freely since then.

Since we live in the corrupt community, neither government nor the police had come to her assistance. The district commissioner Elias Maarugu in an interview with this correspondent agreed that she has not been given legal assistance defending the police negligence that it was the duty of the claimant to write statement to the Police!

I am not a lawyer myself, but whose duty is to take statements of assaulter and accident victims in hospitals and thereafter?

While the world is fighting to empower women as key to achieving the millennium development goals, the government and law enforcers should play their role effectively for the sake of community’s welfare.

The legal and social exclusion and their resultant gender division of labour are product of the patriarchal power relations. These and others like low education, financial instability, and lack of access to strategic resources like land, immovable property etc. are factors that constrain growth of women’s welfare. Others are gender-stereotyped activities, inability to access and use modern technology, heavy workloads, inadequate social support and discriminatory laws.

Women’s participation in social, political and economic affairs can also be realized through implementation of policies which guarantee improved women security, health etc., mostly by freeing them from laborious domestic chores and violence.

Because of lack of legal security, illiteracy and poverty, people like Magdalena Ndilla are bound to live a terror-stricken life in a free and liberated country: unsafe from physical violence, abuse and abandonment. The country in which their contribution to family, community and society is no longer recognized.

I am worried, without comprehensive approach and a coordinated strategy laid and implemented effectively by committed team, tackling women’s problems is going to be a nightmare!

Home Theatre

November 23rd, 2008

With all of the technology that is available for people to be able to make their family or living rooms into their own personal home theaters, many people are deciding that a television, no matter how large it is, is simply not enough to complete their home theater experience. A new line of comparatively small and inexpensive digital home theater projectors is now available for anyone looking for the ultimate home theater experience. People who want to truly experience the atmosphere of the theater can now do so by creating their own miniature screening room complete with a home theater projector.

A home theater project isn’t just for showing movies at home. While videotapes and DVD’s can look amazing when viewed through a home theater projector, television programs, sporting events and even video games viewed through a projector are incredibly entertaining. The price of home theater projectors is very attractive when compared to the latest in big screen televisions and plasma TVs. A home theater project can provide the larger view of television programming often for thousands of dollars less than large televisions.

There are a number of different home theater projectors available to choose from to provide the exact viewing experience each individual desires in their home. It is important to keep in mind when deciding to purchase a home theater projector for the home that it will require a relatively darkened room in order for the images to be seen clearly. Many people can remember seeing the older reel-to-reel projectors that their parent’s showed home movies on for years. Today’s home theater projectors have incorporated digital technology into their design in order to be of a smaller size than traditional projectors and to be able to adjust settings for the perfect image.

Today’s home theater projectors project the light that displays images a number of different ways including the use of a liquid crystal display (LCD), mirrors or a combination of both. Home theater projectors that use a LCD is more likely to be less expensive than other models that use a combination of projection techniques. The most expensive type of home theater projector uses something called Liquid Crystal on Silicon to display images that some people believe to offer the sharpest image from a projector. Once a home theater projector has been chosen, it will require a screen on which to display images or if a person enjoys a challenge, he or she can attempt to construct their own original screen.

Most projectors seem to work best when they are mounted up high or even from the ceiling. Cables coming out of the projector tend to be unsightly and can be hidden inside the ceiling or walls. Hiring a professional to complete this task might be the only way to avoid damage and accidents when attempting to do it alone. Some people find creative ways to conceal the cords by covering them with neutral colored tape and then painting over the tape with the color that matches the ceiling or walls. Other people cover cords with furniture like paintings or bookshelves.

Once a home theater projector has become a part of a complete home theater system, most people rarely opt to use their television for their viewing entertainment. Home theater projectors truly allow for anyone to have their own movie theater right in their own living room.

Limit of Perception

November 22nd, 2008

A balance of “tunnel vision” and broad perspective are needed for human society to flourish.

If you live in modern society I’m sure at some point in your life you’ve sat in a window seat of an airplane looking down at the fluffy blanket of clouds and thought to yourself, ‘Wow, it’s so big and flat, fluffy and soft, I wonder what it would feel like to lay down on that super-soft mattress.’ Well, think about what Socrates, Lao Tsu, Confucius, Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Moses or Mohammed would have thought if they saw the same sight that we pretty much take for granted as ‘normality’. Last night I watched a show on TV entitled, “Limits of Perception” that showed our newly discovered microcosms and macrocosms of life with photography from atomic force microscopes up to the Hubble telescope that looks out into the vast Universe. We can now see below the level of atom, creatures one-tenth of a millimeter long that resemble the monsters of our dreams, and thousands of galaxies grouped together in super-clusters (each galaxy containing billions of stars like our own Sun).

As I watched this show I had to wonder about the way our human society has evolved. I mean, why wasn’t this show seen by every person in our world? Imagine how much ignorance and beliefs to do with why people think they are different from each other would change in an instant. We would all know that we are each made of thirty trillion cells, the same kinds of cells as everyone else, made from the same kind of energy. Wouldn’t this affect the way we treated each other, knowing we are all intrinsically made of the same essence, not to mention that we all come from the same one small home in an infinite Universe of worlds? Wouldn’t this help us from feeling like an isolated species, knowing that every species on Earth is made of the same elements and DNA, and that we are really not alone in space as we are actually surrounded by trillions and trillions of life creating fireball stars?

The funny thing is that I stumbled upon this TV show accidentally, unless of course you believe in destiny rather than random coincidence. TV is full of violence and crime these days, as we seem to have a real curiosity about the darker side of our natures. But the truth is there are people out there who are making TV shows like this one with really positive perspectives, isn’t it strange that most people won’t have known it was even on? It was shown at 11:00 p.m. at night. Have we relegated the magic of life to not-so-prime-time? It’s hard to imagine what the great minds of our ancestors would have thought and done with the information that we seem to take for granted. However, maybe there is a simple reason and subsequent solution to this issue that if we implement could really have huge positive impacts on our society and environment.

Recently a friend of mine gave me an abstract from the website www.getAbstract.com from a book called “The Company of Strangers: A Natural History of Economic Life” written by an economist Paul Seabright. Let me tell you that I’ve always been a little skeptical about economics, except for when I was ten years old and greedily dreamed of being an accountant counting other people’s money and subsequently counting my own. But things changed and I started to believe that all of the degradation of our morality and environment had to do with economic policies and that greed that I knew all too well. Now I try not to look at things so black and white and realize that economics is just a natural process and although it has hurt our world when it has been abused, it has also helped humanity greatly when used responsibly. Today happiness and a high quality of life are being lived by many human beings, yet I think we still need to try and balance the scales by helping the unfortunate people to become more productive.

I’ve gone on a tangent as I often do in conversations but all things are connected and move in circles so I’ll now come back around to the main topic. In Seabright’s book he talks about “tunnel vision”. Tunnel vision is how people in our world get things done. Individuals don’t usually focus on the big picture; rather, they find one specific area of expertise to specialize in. When thousands and thousands of people do their small part the functions of society as a whole get completed. This is the same as all of the cells in our bodies doing their specific tasks to keep the whole machine functioning. Seabright discusses the positive and negative results of this new style of thinking (people in the past were usually more in the vein of ‘Jack of all trades” having multiple skills in many areas of life). One of the great things about this tunnel vision focus that we use in our everyday life besides the obvious attainment of our social needs, is the fact that we now trust strangers more than ever before. We have faith that other people we’ve never actually met will do their specific job properly, as in the case when we put our own physical health in the hands of doctors when we got to the hospital.

The other side of the coin in the case of tunnel vision is the one I spoke of before. We lose the larger perspectives on life that logically bring us all together. People start to think that because they are of a certain religion, nationality, or so-called ‘race’ that they can’t connect with others. The irony is that we all are connecting anyway even if it is unbeknownst to many. Seabright uses an excellent example of the shirt you wear on your back. “Say the cotton came from India, grown with seeds bred in the U.S.A., artificial fiber from Portugal, collar linings from Brazil, and dyes from half a dozen other countries augment the shirt, which was sewn in Malaysia on German machinery. Thus a simple shirt represents a veritable symphony of economic and industrial forces, the likes of which no one person possibly could coordinate.”

So the answer to our dilemma is relatively simple. We need to implement a new perspective that is more balanced between our necessary tunnel vision that gets the job done, and a wider point of view that appreciates both the vastness and minuteness of reality. If we can connect with each other with this more balanced, informed and aware perspective, many of the conflicts and perceived differences between humans could diminish greatly. One might also predict that this new view would also bring about a global advance in consciousness and spirituality as a result of our knowledge of the ‘oneness’ and connectedness of all that exists in the Universe. This would also definitely affect the ways in which we respect and treat the immediate environs around us in terms of nature preservation and treatment of animals and resources.
